Pre-First Year Programs

NxtGEN STEM Scholars
MI-LSAMP’s flagship program for all MI-LSAMP participants; a virtual summer experience based on the best available research on student retention practices.
iSTEM Summer Seminar
The Summer Seminar is a complimentary immersive experience for MI-LSAMP NxtGEN participants that will facilitate social connections to other STEM students and the campus community, provide in-depth exploration of learning environments and resources, and support continued academic preparation for successful transition to a rigorous collegiate learning environment.
Engineering & Science Success Academy (ESSA)
The ESSA is a six-week, residential, academic intensive program designed to acclimate incoming first-year engineers to both the academic and environmental aspects of post-secondary education. Participants will attend daily classes in Math, Writing and Science. Workshops and presentations will expose students to post-graduation and professional opportunities. The first ESSA launched in 2007 with MI-LSAMP funding, and with consistent success became institutionally funded in 2012. (https://www.egr.msu.edu/dpo/)

Research Programs

Comprehensive research training with faculty mentors/preparation for graduate school

Summer Undergraduate Research Academy (SURA)
Scholars learn how to develop and promote their “undergraduate researcher profile” for the purpose of obtaining funded research positions in well-mentored programs such as those offered by NSF, NIH, SROP, TRIO, McNair, EnSURE, BRUSH(ES), SURIEM, etc. Support is provided to help scholars identify opportunities, prepare applications, and present their projects.

Research Programs

Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship Award
The Western Michigan University (WMU) Office of Research and Innovation provides a stipend for semester-long undergraduate research experiences with faculty (not limited to MI-LSAMP students).
Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities Grant
The WMU College of Arts and Sciences provides a stipend to students in the college for semester-long undergraduate research experiences with faculty (not limited to MI-LSAMP students).
LSAMP Undergraduate Research Experience
MI-LSAMP, the WMU Office of the President, and the Office of Research and Innovation, provide undergraduate summer research experiences for 5-6 MI-LSAMP scholars each year.

Undergraduate Student Programs

STEM Talent Expansion Program (STEP)
A support program for students majoring in engineering or applied sciences that includes learning communities, cohorts, tutoring, and mentoring.
College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Preparatory (CEAS-Preparatory)
A pathway for students who wish to major in engineering or applied sciences but do not meet the math requirements for pre-engineering admission.

An academic program at Mott Community College that aids in student success with the goals of increasing persistence, retention, graduation rates, and number of transfer students seeking STEM degrees and interested in STEM careers. MCC STEM scholars particularly focuses on students from populations underrepresented in STEM fields and those with demonstrated financial need.

Research Programs

STEM-199 Undergraduate Research Methods Course (2 Credits)
This course is an introduction to research methods used by professionals in STEM careers. Students will participate in an independent and collaborative research project with a faculty mentor in a selected STEM subject and learn how to formulate significant questions, develop investigative procedures, gather and examine evidence, and evaluate results.
